Lyckantropen "s/t" DVD
[Vendlus]

I was really shocked when this showed up for review, as I'm not much of a "film critic" or whatever, but I was very curious to see this after hearing Ulver's accompanying soundtrack, and the DVD is quite nice. The 27-minute film (which has English subtitles) deals largely with family turmoil, and while nothing within the story is ever revealed concretely, enough is suggested to get the point. There are numerous subtle references to wolves, and the central character is sort of paralleled to that image in certain instances. Most of the movie is shot very dark but with vibrant colors, and everything seems well done to me. I enjoy the interesting compositions and angles of the shots, the music fits in perfectly with the mood, etc. In addition there's around 35 minutes of bonus footage including the original trailer, deleted scenes, a production slide show, etc. The deletes scenes are nice because they also include subtitles, as well as brief text explanations of the reasons behind their removal from the final cut. There's also a 10-minute piece where the cast reflects on the storyline and such, and some footage of the crew recording their own sounds from live wolves rather than using typical stock recordings. Easily the most interesting bonus feature for me is the nearly 20-minute interview with Ulver, regarding their history to date, and how they grew into working with film scores, etc. The two band members present for the interview do seem a little bored by the questions, but it turns out interestingly nonetheless - and even the interview footage is filmed rather artistically! The package is fairly simple and standard: A DVD case with a full color cover, some quotes about the film on the back, etc. I wouldn't call the presentation of the DVD package as striking as the visual aesthetic of the film itself, but it looks fine. And hell, for $10 I really think this is a bargain. I know it's not a long DVD, but $10 seems very reasonable to me... so look into this if you're a curious fan of Ulver's work. (7/10)
