Kutabare "Finger Food Fetish for the Morbidly Abnormal" CD
[Razorback]
They're Australian and they have ex-members of Bestial Warlust, Undinism, and Corpse Molestation in their ranks. The style? It's on Razorback, so you should know that it's sick gore grind, however, this definitely sounds a lot different than most of the stuff on the label. Sure, the indecipherable growling vocals are ever present, and yeah, there are a few speedy moments in place, but for the most part it's moderately paced to slow with a ton of groove. Admittedly sometimes the groovy passages are too out there for me, but when they hit on some chunky sludginess that kind of has a Louisiana vibe kickin' around, I'm all for that shit! It honestly makes the faster moments weak by comparison, because the elements of speed offered up are fairly typical, whereas the moshiness of the midpaced rhythms is really more of a surprise. And what about the weird harmonics and dissonant chords in "Siamese Twins" and "Rime of the Ancient Marinated Corpse"!? I like the production for the most part, too. The drums are clearer than anything else, but they sound alright. And even though the guitars and bass sink in together in a murky, dense mass, you can still make out the bass on its own, and I really like the massiveness of the mix as a whole. If they could figure out a way to bring the drums in with the vocals and stringed instruments it could end up even better. The packaging sort of wastes a lot of space with huge fonts and an enormously printed thanks list rather than lyrics or anything of substance to read through. I kind of like the fact that the paintings used have a really different look to them, but overall this record lacks the usual Razorback aesthetic, which in this case is a bit of a visual setback. I'm tempted to give this a 7/10 because it's one of the best releases I've head from Razorback in awhile, and I really like a lot of the songs... but I think there's still room for improvement. A handful of these songs are boring, but at least half of the CD could've made for an excellent EP. (6/10)
