Intestinal Disgorge "Drowned in Rectal Sludge" CD
[Sonic Death]
Man, this is a letdown. It's over the top gore grind from Brazil so I was sort of hoping it would be like Lymphatic Phlegm or something, but this is just terrible. Musically it's okay, but the vocals are so irritating that I can't stand to listen to it. I don't mind the low growls or midrange sneers (both of which have a Carcass thing going on), but what I refuse to sit through are the painfully high-pitched shrieks and squeals that are about 10 times as loud as the music. It's immensely disrupting and serves no purpose whatsoever, basically rendering the vast majority of the tracks unlistenable. Aside from that the recording is also a little weak. The drums sound programmed even though a live drummer is credited, there's no bassist, the guitar tone is really raw and unnatural (like a direct recording), and the vocals are overpowering - especially those damn squeals. They can easily get away with having no bassist, but they need to work on the guitar tone a little, and the drums definitely need to sound more realistic. As far as the writing, it's fairly typical for the style. Thick chords, a lot of speed as well as some crushing mosh rhythms, short bursts that keep each song averaging around a minute or so, etc. "Toilet Intercourse" is one of the only longer tracks, and there's also no shrieking involved, making it by far one of the only good songs on the entire CD. This definitely has one of the most vile layouts I've ever seen, chock full of disgusting photos of shit covered toilets and other such hideously nasty images related to the ever popular bowel movement. No lyrics are included, likely because there are so many songs, just a huge thanks list, the sick photos, some recording information, and so on. Ignoring the vocals this isn't all that bad, it's typical gore grind with a rawer than necessary recording. But the shrieking vocals are really stupid and ruin the band's music. A few of these songs (the ones without the high vocals) could've made a decent EP, but I can't go easy on 'em... I honestly couldn't listen to this entire CD start to finish, I had to skip 90% of the songs with the squealing plastered all over the place. (2/10)
