Farewell to Youth "s/t" CD
[Lorelei]
I know nothing about this band and knew not what to expect from this EP, I didn't expect it to be as melodic as it is for some reason, and I actually think it's pretty good. Straightforward but fairly diverse emo/indie type stuff with female singing and a slightly pop-punk-ish edge at times, but nothing too polished or anything like that. "Automatic Breath" has some post-hardcore rhythms and a general sense of dissonance between the guitars and vocals that gives it a darker sort of angle, whereas "Against Me" is slower and more openly melodic in a similarly less upbeat manner. "Army Inside" is one of the more melodic and sort of laidback pieces in some ways, though still carrying that post-hardcore sense of rhythm, and it's "No One and Nothing" that picks up the tempo a little bit and tosses in some unexpected dual guitar parts. It's definitely a consistent 18 minutes, granted each song does cover its own ground. The recording gets the job done. The tones sound fine and aside from the vocals being slightly too prominent the mix is even as well. I think they'd sound better with one of those super polished, huge sounds, but then at the same time the rougher edges here actually give them a little extra character that may or may not pertain to where they're coming from. I really like the signing though, and I'm confident that a cleaner production would let those vocal harmonies truly shine. I'm not into the layout. The cover looks okay, but as a whole it's boring. The fonts are boring, the band photos are of a low level of quality, there are no lyrics, etc. All you get is a onecard insert and the tray with minimal recording information and such. Not bad as a whole, though. I like this. It needs a little work to really hit me, but I'm into it for the most part. (6/10)
