Escape Pod "Winter" CD
[Dead Digital]
This brief three-track EP features soft singing vocals that I really enjoy with electronic-based music that I'm undecided on. It's certainly not bad, and portions of it are actually good... but I think I'd prefer it were all the songs like "Seeing", which uses calmer music (resonant piano with thick low-end synths) to create a more fitting and consistent sort of feel. The other two tracks are similar, with lots of faint vocal harmonies and layering, and really the more I listen to it the more the title track wins me over with its relaxed beats and subtle acoustic guitar loops, so I guess it's just minor bits and pieces of the trendier sounding keyboards that bother me. And "Living in Books" isn't so bad either, aside from some keyboard sounds that I'm just not into... This is sort of weird dark pop music or something, with simple structures and memorable arrangements that still have a quirky presence. I'm not totally into it, but at the same time I could see myself flipping out and loving were its finer elements isolated into more developed works. And the recording is great, I'll get that right out there. Everything sounds totally professional, crystal clear, well mixed, etc. I have no complaints there at all. The disc comes in a sleeve printed on lightly textured paper in shades of black and blue ink, with minimal artwork and text. It's basically a tracklist and brief credits, nothing more. For some reason they've gone to the trouble of including "Promotional Copy" on the front cover print job, which makes little sense to me, but whatever. Promising stuff. I like it. It's not something I could listen to regularly, but it could get to that point without a great deal of effort. Interesting, to say the least. (6/10)
Running time - 8:45, Tracks: 3
[Notable tracks: none are bad, but portions of "Winter" and "Seeing" are definitely the finer moments]
