Under Pressure - Still No Future

Under Pressure "Still No Future" CD
[Sound Pollution]

Whew, 10 tracks of ripping hardcore/punk in an all too brief 16 minutes from this Canadian outfit formerly known as the mighty Guns Liquor and Whores. I like this even more than the GLW material as well. It's similarly fast hardcore/punk with a very subtle, grinding edge at times and a good dose of rock tossed in, with really unique vocal shouts that are fucking awesome. "Anthem" cranks out a few quick rock 'n' roll riffs, whereas "State of Arrest" is more rocked out as a whole - complete with quick lead riffs (and a nice little Black Flag run), a few slower passages, etc. "To the Slaughter", on the other hand, is all go... nothing but furious speeds and an intense break, no messing around. And "Pissing on the Idiot Parade" starts out slow and builds up from plodding bass to a driving rhythm and more speed with some nice vocal tradeoffs and drum fills. They close with two covers, "It's Time" by The Faith, and "Who Are You" by Void, which of course fit right in. Few songs hit two minutes, so they tear right through and leave you wanting more. The recording is pretty cool. It's pretty clear but still really raw, and the tones are awesome. The vocals sound great, the guitars are warm and have a fuzzy edge, the bass sounds like a million bucks, and the drums are totally natural. If I could change anything I might drop the vocals back just a tad, and I would definitely turn that bass up, because a tone that goods needs more room to kill. The layout is all done in black and white with clean text and all that jazz. It looks really good because it has that "typical" look to it, but the images are actually handled in a way that has more depth and stuff, so it really doesn't look typical. The lyrics are great, generally just sticking to pissed off attacks with a nice sense of humor, and on rare occasion ("State of Arrest" and "To the Slaughter") tackling more serious issues. "Deluded/diluted masses united by fear, and if not by the former, united by beer. The state of affairs is frightful. But I can see it now... It would be all too delightful. All these carcinogens work too slow... Call in the airstrike and let it fucking snow." Awesome. I know these guys have recorded more songs, so they need to release some more jams as soon as possible. This rules. (8/10)
