Pig Destroyer "Painter of Dead Girls" CD
[Robotic Empire]
This incredibly brief disc collects some previously released tracks from the band's split 3" CD with Benumb, their split CD with Gnob, plus some live material, covers, and three CD-Rom videos of songs recorded live at CBGB's in 2000. As most probably know, this band is a three-piece of blasting grind mayhem with more than a few ripping thrash metal riffs and some sick slower dirges happening as well. They're tight as hell and you'll get plenty of speed, forceful moderately paced rhythms, a few slower passages, relentless screaming vocals... the works. Most tracks are well under a minute, but every now and then a slightly longer track like "Rejection Fetish" comes along and gives you more to chew on. Among the covers are "Fuck You Up and Get High" by the Dwarves, "Down in the Streets" by The Stooges, and the unexpected shot of "In the Meantime" by Helmet (which sounds fucking awesome). There's mention in the booklet of an 18th track recorded live to minidisk, but there are only 17 songs on the CD, so who knows? The recordings vary but for the most part the guitar tone is more than aptly heavy, the vocals always sound great, and the drums can get a little taut sometimes, though the overall density of the mix usually keeps them in check. A few songs sound too crispy and slightly dirty for me, but the bulk of it sounds good and fairly consistent as far as mastering and all that. The cover artwork is fucking great on this thing. Nice colors and textures, really eerie... definitely catching the eye. The lyrics and such (for half of the songs, anyway) appear in bold white text across the center spread, then there's a live photo and that's about it. If you've got most of these tracks on the old splits, it might not be worth your money to grab this for the extras, but if not, it's worth tracking down. Good stuff. Short... but good stuff. (7/10)
