Patareni "Obrade" CD
[Falsanja Kol'Ko's]

This seems to be the CD version of a Patareni tribute LP that was originally released in the mid-90's, with a handful of bonus tracks making this an enormous collection that runs a whopping 72 minutes total. W.B.I. starts off with three covers' worth of noisy grindcore, and Scrawl offers more of the same but throws in a strange ska break and some other little quirks (within 33 seconds, mind you). Hladno Pivo stands out with far more of a classic punk rock sound, throwing a little melody in there with more of an upbeat edge, and not so fast. Very cool. Strelnikoff/Joze Broz Trio do a "techno rave remix" of "Sekunda", and it is indeed strange, what with bopping basslines, stuttered rhythmic samples and beats, etc. Brazilian grind kings Rot take on the aptly titled "Fuck You All", and Beyond Description drops a ripping take on "System Shit" (Slap bass!?), Cripple Bastards run through five tracks that come off a as a bit more diverse to me than the band's original material, and Sterbehilfe goes through another five (including another hit of "Fuck You All"). The Viseur Trio have the longest track (4:09), using piano and wind instruments in their rendition of "Deadland Massacre". Porota uses growling vocals with flutes, acoustic guitars, and distant percussion; Violent Headache does a powerful but way raw rendition of, what else, "Fuck You All"; the Necrophiliacs and Mayhem Decay Cudgel are pretty forgettable, though not awful; Insidious Anal Homicide does two (including yet another cover of "Fuck You All"); The Pacjenti mixes hardcore/punk and grind... and guess what song Desinence Mortification does? Yes, that's correct. "Fuck You All". U.S.uck also does "Fuck You All", in addition to a few others. (In the end I start to wonder if bands just chose that song because it has a cool title, I mean, come on...) There are bonus tracks from Prosti Fucktori, Refrend, Vekerica, and Patareni themselves, though I'm not sure what the details on these tracks are. Prosti Fucktori's track has a great sound and an awesome rock 'n' roll flare, Refrend also has a great recording and female singing vocals (using melody and a wide range of calmer influences from ska to laidback rock), Vekerica sounds like the same band as Refrend, and the Patareni tracks are hit and miss. A few other bands that take part are Speedball, Minus Cway, Garage Monsters, Fear of Dog, Ruido de Odio, and Bloody George, but they're all pretty worthless in my opinion (at times due to unlistenable recordings). Most of the bands have really raw sounds, some worse than others, so there are a lot of sort of quiet and muddy tracks, some that sound appropriate, and a few that sound rather good considering. The layout sort of makes this look like an actual Patareni CD, but inside there is some original artwork and liner notes (this time in English) that clear things up a bit. The liner notes still aren't detailed enough to give you much information (such as what some of the bonus tracks are), but the packaging here gets the job done ever so slightly better than the Patareni discography releases. In the end I don't like this so much because out of a ton of bands I only really like four of 'em, and some of those bands only do one song as opposed to the three or four that others covered. I guess there are some people out there who might enjoy this for over an hour, but I can't classify myself as one of them! (5/10)
Running time - 72:06, Tracks: 54
