Maleux "Carrion Rust" 3
[NCC]
Another 3" disc from NCC, and another with three tracks of fairly harsh yet atmospheric noise in its ranks. "Voices" kicks it off with some crystal clear distortion that mixes thick density with some crunchy stereo panning and garbled midrange. "Amputation" is quieter for its first minute, and then some throbbing drones roll through and thicken things up quite a bit, looping and bouncing around with many levels creating a strange sense of rhythm. There are some very faint underlying musical elements, but just barely... though they do give it that "more than noise" edge. It feels a little long for its redundancy, but it's not a lost cause. "Man in a Cage" runs more than nine minutes and opens with a careful musical loop, fairly quiet, and brief samples mixed against some windy tones as a harsh loop fades to the foreground. Feedback starts to seep in with some searing distortion and what sound like some distorted vocal treatments in the distance (at one point some heavily treated Charles Manson samples do come into play - which works fine, but I'd prefer to hear less overused samples). The disc comes in a 3" slim jewel case with an insert printed from a high-end color printer. The text looks sort of rough around the edges but I can live with it. The cover is a strange collage of crusty industrial sorts of textures and some internal organs or something, and then the back is just jet black with the song titles in white. Not bad. I'm not familiar with this project but this is pretty good stuff. I think using fewer loops could be beneficial, or at least making the loops less obvious, but there's some value here that I'll be curious to hear explored further down the road. (6/10)
