Gerritt - Toured

Gerritt "Toured" CD
[self-released]

30 minutes of unreleased material that I believe is exclusive to this tour-only CD-R release from Gerritt's recent east coast excursion. This one's got it all, from quick, 30-second ambient pieces to shredding harsh noise that's louder than I'm used to and really fucks with your ears due to all the high-end grating and aggressive layering/stereo panning. It's far, far different than anything I've heard from Gerritt before. A lot of the sounds are probably digitally generated/manipulated because the clarity is pristine, but then there are some sparse, calm moments that have a warmer feel more suggestive of unusual field recordings or such. And the truly blaring harsh noise moments are very thick and textured, so there's no way to be certain just how all of this is coming at you. A few samples are integrated at times, chopped up so that you get bits and pieces of what's going on, but not a totally clear picture. Curious, for sure. The last track runs almost 16 minutes and is by far and wide the longest track on the disc, definitely leaving its mark as a good indicator of just how varied these recordings are as far as shifts between different textures and overall styles - though none of it sounds out of place or whatnot. As mentioned all of the recordings are crystal clear with no exceptions. The sound quality is also rather dynamic as the levels can range from very faint to so, so, so fucking loud that I can't even believe it. Turning the volume on my headphones down to the bare minimum there are a few moments that still almost hurt my ears. The CD-R comes in a simple sleeve that's largely white with photos of feet jumping up off the ground on each side, wrapping around and meeting in the center. Simple enough. I'm not that big on the packaging, most of Gerritt's designs are a bit more intriguing than this, but oh well. I look forward to hearing more based on these recordings. (7/10)
