Foutredieu!!! "Fled - How Statues Try to Get Out of Solitude" CD
[Brise-Cul]

Canada's Foutredieu!!! is back again with another lengthy CD-R release that runs across a wide spectrum of influences. The all too brief "Évasion" starts things out with some somber clean guitars and hard panned effects that overload the levels and get pretty abrasive towards the end, while the equally succinct "Collection of Statues" is far harsher and brings in some pitch-shifted (Sampled?) vocals. "Aucun Attachment" is the first truly great track here, mixing sinister dark ambient tones with some effectively raw midrange distortion and strange samples mixed into the distance. After a few more quick and fairly harsh attacks, "Fuir" brings back the droning, thick ambience with about five minutes of fairly repetitive rumbles and drones with a couple of dirtier middleground textures. "You Are Lost in Eternity" brings back more nice, faint musical elements (A stringed instrument perhaps?) after an introductory burst of in your face volume; and "Vous ne M'attraperez Jamais" is very minimal - bouncing back and forth between sparse ethereal textures breaking in amongst a fluttering, unstable hum that sounds almost like some sort of machine and harsher, more direct layers of noise (for over eight minutes, probably the most varied piece herein). There's also an unlisted track of weird 70's sounding progressive rock/jazz riffs or something, but with lots of wild delay and skipping motion over top of it. The CD-R comes in a xeroxed slipcase with some abstract artwork and an interesting little insert with a bizarre looking tracklist repeated across the front at a diagonal, and some contact information on the back along with the phrase, "While you collect statues, most of them wish to fall..." For the most part this release is a pretty even balance of aggressive noise versus the calmer side of things. I of course prefer the more dynamic or solely ambient tracks, but I enjoy the fact that the harsh pieces aren't generic, nor are they so long that they get dull. I think that perhaps adding more controlled endings to the selections might make the listen less jumbled (most of the pieces start and end very abruptly), but a few of these tracks are arguably the strongest to date from the Foutredieu!!! fold. Not bad... still getting there. (6/10)
