Brittle Foundries "Sanguine Landscapes" CD
[Snip-Snip]
Another CD-R from yet another side project of the ever prolific David Reed (Luasa Raelon/Envenomist), this time cranking out one 19-minute track of brooding, minimal dark ambient hums and drones that possess a bit of an ethereal edge. Around eight minutes into the track things drop back to a very faint lull of low-end and start to become slightly more ominous as distant percussive sounds rest far off behind a hollow sort of electronic whirr. At this point things haven't been terribly interesting in the piece, but as a subtly melodic sort of melancholy texture starts to float around and stir things back up over the course of the next few minutes (on through to the end of the selection), the composition certainly starts to catch my ear and take a turn for the better. Like most Snip-Snip releases the CD-R is housed in a slim jewel case with xeroxes on colored paper for the packaging, though I have to confess that this is one of the worst looking covers I've ever seen on one of the label's releases, and I can't for the life of me figure out why such crude visuals would be employed, but whatever. Like the recent Envenomist release on Snip-Snip, this track is fairly consistent and immobile in the grand scheme of things, though perhaps slightly less effective than the Envenomist material simply because there's only one track upon which to gauge the project's approach, so... I'd need to hear more to really get a better feel for where Brittle Foundries is taking things, because this is good, but I liked the "Elegy" 3" a touch more, so I'm not totally floored just yet. Not bad, though. The second half of the track is certainly more moving (I'm not sure how, as it's quite similar to the opening segment, but whatever the case, the intricacies make a difference), thus pointing to bigger and better things. (6/10)
