The Cherry Point "Cloudburst" CS
[Samsa]
Side A opens up sounding very different from the majority of what I've heard from The Cherry Point, using a thick low-end distortion that's much more rhythmic and droning in a way, almost reaching an industrial sort of edge, but it does lack the structure one would associate with that. Gradually it shifts over into more of a thin midrange distortion, still quite minimal, and still having that droning quality all the same. Things remain similar for the most part afterwards, aside from developing a bit of a crunchy chirping motion that breaks into some feedback at times. The rest of the track feels a bit more standard on a subtle level, but it still retains that great atmosphere somehow. Side B is sort of the same type of thing, a bit thicker and more textured with punches of feedback, but still quite minimal and generally a little more atmospheric than a lot of harsh noise can be. It does calm down a little bit and get a vibrating sort of density to it, and I think that makes a difference, though certainly not breaking its consistent appeal. The cassette comes in a standard case with a black and white insert that has minimal text and soft abstract textures as art. This is a nice cassette, and one of the better releases I've heard from The Cherry Point to date if memory serves. It's simple, but possesses that special something that I look for in harsh noise to draw me in, and this really does so in a way that I can't pin down, making it that much more curious. Well done.
