Gerritt - Chill Pill

Gerritt "Chill Pill" 3" CD
[P Tapes]

This 3" CD-R is the latest release from Gerritt, containing four tracks in less than 15 minutes. First up is "Chill Pill (Take One)", opening with sparse cutups that jump quickly back and forth from samples of coughing to wispy midrange, crispy bursts of electronic noise, and fleeting little melodies. But be careful, the volume shoots up exponentially around two minutes in, as things shift gears into a rising and falling wall of brutal harsh noise that had my ears feeling a little fucked up after all was said and done. Seriously... that shit gets loud! The first of two untitled pieces follows at barely over a minute of sparse arrangements similar to the opening passage of "Chill Pill (Take One)", but with a bit more of an electronic flare to it. After an abrupt end, "The Random Ones", which tops seven minutes and is by far the longest composition, takes a similar road but uses lots of reverberated samples of metallic clankings and such. Occasionally things get brighter and become more manipulated by effects, with faint speaking often presenting itself in the distance. The final 30 seconds or so is another attack of vicious harsh noise, but thicker and a little less over the top than before. The closing untitled selection is longer than the first, but similar in approach, sticking with a midrange sort of tone that sweeps back and forth into hints of distortion and light ambience. Not bad at all. Housed in a simple little matte sleeve, there's a little bit of printing in brown ink on the cover, and that image is duplicated inside on a tiny xeroxed insert. The CD-R is then inside of a plastic sleeve that has the song titles on a sticker placed on its cover. Simple yet effective. For the most part this release is short but sweet, which works to its benefit because oftentimes this style is tiresome to me, but there's enough movement and variety to keep things interesting here, but without getting overbearing or redundant. As with the other releases in this series, the disc is limited to 100 copies, so don't sleep on it if you're interested. (7/10)
Running time - 14:20, Tracks: 4
[Notable tracks: all four are pretty good]
