Blacklisted "We're Unstoppable" CD
[Deathwish]
Here's another quick blast of heavy hardcore from this Philadelphia outfit, combining their last EP ("Our Youth is Wasted") along with their demo for a total of 18 minutes of in your face material. Expect a mix of faster chord progressions based more around the traditional old school sound and plenty of midpaced breaks that are heavier and more along the NYHC side of things, with pissed off vocals that have a harsher and more unique edge than most such bands. The recording gives them more of their own sound as well, as they've got a little more dirtiness to their guitar tone, which helps keep things from sounding metallic during the moshier portions. The demo's a little rougher all around and lacks the over the top punch of the EP, but despite minor issues across the board both sessions sound pretty good. "Finding Faith" has a solid midpaced groove for most of its duration, "That Ain't Real Much" drops a sick breakdown that's among the most powerful moments on the entire disc, "3800 (We're Unstoppable)" certainly hits on a few Madball-esque moments, and "Transparent/Opaque" is a touch heavier and definitely stands out as a result. On the demo, the verse passages in "Left Alone" sound so much like the Cro-Mags that it's almost ridiculous, but who can really complain about that!? Like "Our Youth is Wasted" the entire layout is done in black and white with high contrast imagery and a matte finish that all looks great to me. The lyrics are bitter as hell and cover your average hardships in life in an honest fashion: "Left with time and nothing to say, guess it's time to face the facts. I'll save the fucking straws that broke my back. I'm trying. I'm trying. I'm trying to give up on regret. I'm trying. I'm trying. I'm trying to learn to forget." I don't know what more to say, really. Fans of pissed off hardcore with no frills should absolutely be into this band. I'm just waiting on getting to hear some new material from 'em! (7/10)
