Agalloch "The Grey" CD
[Vendlus]
Few bands could take an instrumental two-track EP and make it so exceptionally awesome, especially when the first track is an incredibly repetitive 13+ minute take on a track from their last full-length, as is opener "The Lodge (Dismantled)". And damn if I wouldn't enjoy it were it even double that length! It's just that wonderful! Plodding chord progressions, melodic lead lines, simple yet perfectly executed drum fills... it's almost droning and hypnotic in a sense, it's longer than it feels, which is a perfect way to execute it. The piece ends with several minutes of feedback and grating guitar noises, before fading to a close before bassist J. William W.'s Nothing project follows with a 7+ minute dark ambient remix of "Odal" (also taken from "The Mantle"). The composition is thick and full of low-end, based largely around smooth loops and drones that have either a slight edge of melody or a sinister edge of subtle distortion. Much like the first track it's very consistent and passes by with ease, and what variations exist are well orchestrated so as not to disrupt the listening experience. Visually everything is, well, grey, with close-up shots of what appear to be painterly strokes and textures, with clean, minimal text inside regarding the titles and recording information. There's practically no text on the outer packaging whatsoever aside from the label's catalog number. This EP is limited to 1,000 copies, so I ordered one as soon as it was released. I assume they are still available, and I would highly recommend obtaining one if you're able. Once again Agalloch proves why they are without question one of the finest metal bands active today. Splendid. (9/10)
