Profane Existence - #47

Profane Existence "#47" magazine
[Profane Existence]

Here's another one from the Profane Existence camp, maintaining a consistent level of quality with the last couple of issues in terms of overall delivery over the course of 100 pages with high quality printing and full color covers.  Among the interviews this time out is a quick chat with Avskum and longer talks with Extinction of Mankind, Blown to Bits, Ballast, and Iskra.  For the most part the interviews are definitely a little more substantial this time out, with all of the bands covering a range of topics from political opinions to tour stories, and most of the stuff is pretty damn interesting.  Iskra is especially wordy and well spoken, with Ballast making a nice go at it as well.  Even the Avskum piece, while a quick chat, is a pretty informative read.  The non-musical interviews include the Spokes Pizza Collective and this issue's artist spotlight on Kieran Plunkett.  I'm not as into his work as I have been the other artists selected, but it's still an obvious choice and a good read.  Other standbys present are another cool edition of "The Injustice System" with contributions from prison inmates, and the "By Any Medium Necessary" section, which is sort of an elaborate column compiled by Dave Trenga (Behind Enemy Lines, ex- Aus Rotten).  This section tends to be hard for me to get through in its entirety as I'm just not that big on that much of the political stuff, but I have to admit that this time around some of the outlandish quotes from super christian religious "leaders" (read: zealots) and absurd statements from the bible made for a pretty good slice of entertainment.  Among the other content is a Jilted/Beyond Description German tour diary written by their roadie, a zine bibliography outlining every prior issue of Profane Existence to date, a brief (and perhaps insanely idealistic) guide to alternative feminine products, vegan recipes, columns, and reviews.  As with past issues the columns are kept pretty short and tend to be a little easier to read than some such zines, and the reviews are an average length of about one short paragraph each and cover only material that the writers truly enjoy in order to make sure that all of the most promising recordings can receive proper coverage.  There are a surprisingly large amount of zines reviewed as well, with a couple of letters and responses tossed in at the last few pages just prior to the mere five or six pages of advertisements.  Another solid offering from what is undoubtedly one of the best punk zines ever. (7/10)
