Dream Into Dust "s/t" 7"
[Athanor]
This brief picture disc EP offers up two distinct tracks of Dream Into Dust's unique experimental approach, with "Salvation's Corridor" taking side A and opening with some sparse yet crisp percussive sounds layered against occasional swells of low-end. Gradually the sinister background swells start to build in more constantly to thicken things up and create an odd counterbalance to the rhythmic nature of the foreground sounds. This persists for the bulk of the track, with the percussive elements fading away just prior to the final stretch of twisted ambience. Side B sees "Crystal Mirrors" taking a much different road and opening with some distant drones backing a guitar harmonic melody over persistently strummed acoustic chords and faint programmed beats/synths for a much more musical and ethereal atmosphere. This is another consistent and repetitive track, but the melodies and layers definitely rise and fall throughout to keep things progressing and building. The picture disc comes in a clear sleeve and uses stark monochromatic photography on each side with imagery that ties into the song titles. As is sometimes the case with picture discs the sound is perhaps not as loud and full as it would be on a CD or a standard slab of vinyl, but that makes little difference here as the recording is quite lush and warm, so I have no complaints there. I've not heard a great deal from Dream Into Dust over the years sans "The Lathe of Heaven" and occasional standalone tracks here and there, but I've never been disappointed, and this is definitely a project that I'd like to explore further in the future. Good work. (7/10)
Running time - 9:00 (approximately), Tracks: 2
[Notable tracks: both are rather nice, but "Crystal Mirrors" is my favorite]
