R><T/Pulse Emitter - s/t

R><T/Pulse Emitter "s/t" CD
[House of Lies]

A five track collaboration between these two projects. I'm not familiar with Pulse Emitter but I don't enjoy this as much as I enjoy RT or R><T, so I'm guessing that perhaps Pulse Emitter is the weak link? The, shall we say... silly title "Robot Hanging Blood-Sacks" shouldn't confuse, as it's actually far stronger than the quirky opening track, consisting of oppressive low notes with a subtle hint of melody and some percussive sounds here and there. "Dead (Wh)orbiter" is based around an electronic sounding loop backed up some sizzling dry tones that mingle about, but it's very dull and too persistent for what it has too offer. "Caffeinated Legs" is somewhat similar as far as structure goes, though it's more minimal, and I like the windy midrange. The jumbled electronic sounds aren't for me, though. All of these strange sounds make me wonder if that's Pulse Emitter's style, as the bleak atmospheres characteristic of RT/R><T are basically nowhere to be found. Another stupid title, "Clownpoliopants", closes the disc at more than 12 minutes. It's still a little irritating for me as far as the actual blippy sort of sounds used, but it sounds better than most of the other compositions and despite its overly long and repetitive drive I do enjoy it. Numbered out of 18 copies, this one comes in a xeroxed slipcase with a xeroxed insert, containing minimal text and images of robotic hands. I'm not that into the visuals on this one, this is probably the poorest looking release to date from House of Lies. Well, I guess it's the poorest sounding one too, which I hate to say, but... it's by far my least favorite, and the only thing I've heard from the label to date that I actually tend to dislike. Oh well. (4/10)
