Evol "Punani Shell" CD
[Scarcelight]

Wow, no offense, but I do not like this at all. One 22-mintue track of nothing but random bits and pieces of jumbled and chaotic electronic noise in quick, constantly shifting spurts. Strange glitches, reverberated crackles and blips, hyperactive digital sounds, tons of cascading back and forth/front to back motions, very brief snippets of musical tendencies... and that's about it, give or take. Just toss it all in a blender for an insane cavalcade of sound, and there you have it. Sure, the recording is really loud and pristinely clear and all of the panning is really crisp and whatnot... the sound quality is great. But the sounds themselves? Boring. Uninteresting. Horrible, in fact. I'm tempted to say that I hate this. It's been handled with a professional level of quality, but shit... I can't listen to this. There's no feeling or atmosphere at all, it's just completely irritating and annoying. Nonsense noise, in my opinion. If you told me the entire release was some sort of a concept or experiment created entirely using a decimated computer or something, that would give it some frame of reference and I could tolerate it from an outside perspective. I wouldn't like it, I would still think it's totally boring, but I could at least say, "Ehhh, it stinks, but that's kind of interesting." But that's not the case, so... it stinks and it's not at all interesting. The disc comes in a slim cardboard slipcase with abstract artwork and minimal text information. So, there's really not much to it, but it looks alright and gets the job done. Still, this is not the kind of thing I appreciate at all when it comes to experimental noise. I don't know... Good sound? Sure. Well presented? Pretty much. But the "music"? No. Just... no. (2/10)
