Freiband - Martin - Seven [New] Aspects

Freiband "Martin - Seven [New] Aspects" 3" CD
[TIBProd.]

Freiband hails from The Netherlands and is a project from Frans de Waard of Kapotte Muziek (among others), and this is a very interesting release built around a simple yet creative concept. The recordings are dedicated to Martin Hannett, who recorded a select few experimental tracks of his own at one point, but is being more specifically honored for his work producing Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures" album. It seems that under the influence of drugs and a lack of sleep, Hannett left several "false starts" and extra sounds at the beginnings of the tracks on said album, and it was those sounds that were used to create all of this material. Interestingly enough, the seven tracks and 20 minutes herein consist of somewhat minimal ambient experiments, keeping things relatively quiet and consistent with lots of windy midrange wisps, rhythmic loops, tactful repetition, and subtle variations on developing themes. "Fourth [New] Aspect" is much louder and brighter, using variations on a rhythmic percussive arrangement for its duration; while by contrast the pulses, blips, and crackles in "Fifth [New] Aspect" are practically inaudible. "Sixth [New] Aspect" then takes a richer and more musical sort of turn with some almost melodic reverberations and eerie undercurrents that create the most atmospheric of the compositions (a busier match for the equally dark and intriguing "Second [New] Aspect"). The white CD-R comes in a simple package printing black text and one simple decorative graphic on textured white paper. Simple, but very quaint and minimal - I like it. This is very nice work. I was hooked as soon as I read the liner notes explaining the release, and thankfully the music really delivers. I'm quite pleased with this one. (7/10)
