Adolph Satan "s/t" CD
[Bestial Onslaught]
Ex-members of Anal Cunt and Upsidedown Cross, among others, throw down for a little over a half-hour of dirty, grimy, sludgy metal with indecipherably cackled vocals and an overall sense of depravity. Some of the thicker and more midpaced riffing sounds like a grimier Fudge Tunnel, with the vocals and noisier sludge bearing some comparisons to Eyehategod and the like, or even Black Flag in tiny spurts. There's a decent amount of rhythmic chunkiness happening too, though nothing gets too heavy due to the character of the sound. The disc was produced by Steve Austin, and while I normally think his work as a producer stinks, it suits this band great, because when you're trying to make something sound filthy and raw, you can't really go but so wrong, can you? Either way, the analog recording works very well for this style. Everything has a live sort of vibe to it, and it's certainly rough on the ears, but everything plays an equal role in the mix and I think it fits. As for the songs themselves? "Point and Grunt" is among the more memorable and straightforward tracks; "Falling to the Ground" has a strangely dissonant sort of "stoner rock" twist to its chords and plodding basslines - also hinting at some of the doomier sorts of chords that pop up here and there throughout the record; "Polio Juice" is slightly faster and has more of a chug to its tempo; and "Bopeep Stick" runs 6+ minutes and is by far the slowest and most destructively ominous of the compositions, using tons of pounding chords and fucked up clashing notes with slightly out of tune playing. Visually it does look crappy, however, if I must be so blunt. Maybe that's the point, but it's basically straight band photos and minimal text, nothing more, nothing less. No lyrics are included, but I doubt that matters since the content's all sort of silly anyway. I'm not blown away by this and I'd definitely prefer lyrical themes that were simply bitter and hopeless outlooks on life rather than dealing with topics like "In the Rain With No Cocaine" or "Here Comes the Cum", but I definitely like this more than I thought I would. Not so bad. A little boring at times considering it's only a 35-minute release, but not so bad. (6/10)
