Triac/Medic "Split" 7"
[Reptilian]
Triac takes side A with three tracks of brutal motherfucking grind: Ripping screams, thick and pounding slow parts, insane speeds with perfect precision, etc. The slower breaks are really intense and definitely beef up the writing to make the speeds work (see "You're Their Figure of God" especially), but they've got some stellar songwriting going on regardless, making excellent use of tempo changes. Imagine Assück meets early Benümb meets mid-era Napalm Death maybe? A killer production quality accents things even more. It can get a little biting at the edges, but there's a thick bass presence, a fairly clear mix, and it's heavy as hell. The drummer hits hard as fuck, too. Medic follows on side B with two tracks mixing blazing grindcore speeds with some sludgy dissonance and hoarse vocal screams. It's sort of metalcore-ish in its tactful use of chaotic riffing with some caustic textures and sloppy instances, but rhythmically it's totally tight. "Proxy" opens with some thick bass and post-hardcore guitar textures for more of an open feel, so there's definitely a variety of styles here. The recording's decent. A little noisy and unclear, but the point gets across. Their grating approach makes things a little more acerbic in and of itself, but it's easy to deal with overall. The record comes in an awesome sleeve with vibrantly colored cover art and the band logos in red metallic foil inlays. No lyrics are included for either band, just black and white band pics and such. It's impossible to decipher a word of content from either band, so... fuck it. This is a nice split. Watch out for Triac down the line, trust me. (7/10)
