Disrespect "s/t" 7"
[Profane Existence]
This band features former members of Misery, Destroy, Pissed, and Civil Disobedience playing straight up hardcore/punk apparently inspired by the 80's UK style (though it sounds a little different than that), with three vocalists (male and female) shouting over simple and moderately fast chord progressions with a few dirty lead lines. The lead vocals are damn solid, with plenty of backups as well. "No Sign of Life" has one stuttered break that's a little slower and more melodic, offering a different feel from most of the other tracks; while female vocals take the lead in "Rich Kid" and make for a more memorable track that also has a different sort of rhythm style. The songs are good, but I hate the guitar tone on this thing. I'm totally fine with the raw recording, the mix and most of the tones are fine, but the guitars are thin and unnatural - sounding like a direct line recording or something. They just don't have the rugged warmth that they need to fit in, you know? The record comes on clear yellow vinyl in a nice black and white sleeve on matte stock. The art and text is all ripping off the Discharge aesthetic in a major way (of course), with the lyrics taking on cops, drugs, politics, etc. "Another work day a nail in the coffin, Fucker in the office is the one who's laughing, No sign of life in this stagnant tomb, From my first breath I knew my fate was doomed..." Not bad. Everything is straightforward and no nonsense, and I like it for the most part. They just need a better take on that whole "buzzsaw" guitar tone thing. The writing could be better as well, but this is a solid start. (6/10)
