Hutt "Sessão Descarrego" CD
[2+2=5]
I checked out this Brazilian band's demo last year, and here they are with their debut full-length of ripping grindcore with no messing around: 29 tracks in 31 minutes! Most of the songs run less than a minute, with lots of blasting percussion (with nice fills, the drumming is really cool here in my opinion), tremolo picking riffs, and a mix of low growling vocals and midrange screaming, both of which sound really strong. This is definitely what I would tag as classically inspired grindcore, as the quality of the songwriting and overall vibe are more in line with what I think of when it comes to this genre, because the speed makes sense and doesn't feel forced or overbearing, there aren't really any major death metal influences that seep in, etc. Sure, there are definitely some slower breaks that can on occasion get slightly groovy or breakdown-ish (see "Nova" for an example of some of this midpaced playing), and I'd cite a pretty significant comparison to Napalm Death circa "Utopia Banished" in a lot of these riffs, but the main difference is that Hutt keeps the songs short as fuck and focuses on energetic tempos. I wouldn't say there's a ton of variety, as around 20 minutes in the songs definitely start to sound somewhat the same, but there are enough nuances here and there to hold my interest, and that energy to their riffs really makes a huge difference for the better... a lot of bands don't grasp how important that is. They do throw in a select few samples that run on for a little long sometimes, but it's not that big a deal since I guess it provides a quick break from all of the blazing speeds. The sound is on the rough side, but intentionally so I'd wager, and it works fine because the mix is pretty even and it's thick as hell, so I've got no real issue with that. The higher cackling screams can sound a little thin and grating, but the guitar tone kicks ass, the percussion sounds really tight and natural, and I'm fine with the overall results. The layout is done almost entirely in high contrast black and white, with a little bit of gray, using lots of imagery based around old horror movie posters and horror themed comic books and stuff like that, straight down to the lettering and such. Every word of the lyrics is in Portuguese, so I can't say much about that, but a few English song titles like "Smells Like Teen Shit", "Golden Shower", and "Bronson" suggest that this is a band that's trying to have fun more than convey a serious message... or at least that would be my guess! These guys have definitely improved since the time of their demo, so that's great to see. I'd definitely recommend this to straight up grind fans, as I can't imagine such listeners being let down by this. It never really lets up from start to finish, so... dig in. (7/10)
