Brittle Foundries "Elegy" 3" CD
[Snip-Snip]
One long track of stunning dark ambient soundscapes from this side project of Luasa Raelon's David Reed. The piece opens softly with lots of ethereal synth textures that harbor a little bit of faint melody and create a strange sort of billowy aura that's somehow a little sinister, but also rather full and resonant in its calmness. These faint layers of low-end and midrange fade in and out and swirl about very consistently, building a very hypnotic sort of pace with the repetition of the piece, and that works incredibly effectively here. About eight minutes in things fade back to near silence before more openly melodic keyboards come in and practically start anew with a subtly different sort of vibe, though the overall character is quite similar to the first chunk of the composition. The piece starts to come to a close around 14 minutes in, stripping down once more with chiming bells taking over in the distance and layering together for an even more resonant sort of ethereal ring, signaling the final wave of buzzing, droning synths in this seemingly three-part epic (with the bells returning softer to close the track). The sound quality is superb as well. Thick and full, with resonant low-end, a clean and clear mix, and nice use of stereo panning to add depth to the selection. The 3" CD-R is housed in a small plastic sleeve in a miniature version of the norm for Snip-Snip with a green wraparound over a xerox showing some bird-headed figures having an altercation or something. Quite odd. This is a great song, though. I could damn near argue that I enjoy this more than anything I've heard from Luasa Raelon! I'd love to hear a solid full-length of this material, or even a well-presented 7", which could potentially be even better under the right circumstances! Definitely recommended. This project still seems to be in the early stages, what with only three releases to its name (all of which are mere 3" CD-R's, I think), but this is a very promising excursion considering, so keep an eye out for more. Great job. (7/10)
