Adore Miridia "s/t" CD
[Goodbye Blue Skies]
Five tracks of frantic metalcore that borders on grind in less than 10 minutes. Expect hoarse vocal screams, lots of changes between chunky chord progressions and noisy tremolo picking higher up on the neck, discordant melodies and blasting drum patterns, and plenty of sheer chaos in the riffing department. The songwriting is of course rather jumbled as a result, with a few passages that stick around for awhile, but very little revisitation of the bits and pieces once they pass by for the first time, making rather short tracks feel ineffectively bulkier. "City Skyline" has one clean break with a little feedback that builds into an interesting dissonant midpaced chord progression, and that's definitely one of the finer moments on this thing. The last track is an unlisted instrumental that's longer, slower, and more melodic than any of the other songs, and therefore it becomes more tangible and powerful to me. I actually enjoy it significantly more than any of the other songs. The recording is okay. A little dirty, but generally fine. A little more clarity would be nice since the music is so wild and crazy that there's definitely some character loss happening in there, but the drums sound tolerable, the bass is there a little bit, and I'm okay with the guitar tone. I do kind of like the vocal recording because it allows the hoarseness to show through, and the dude's really blowing himself out, which adds a certain something, you know? Visually this looks alright, with a consistent layout that uses lots of abstract blue textures and layers of white shapes with text and a few band photos. There's a good amount of blank white space to keep it looking somewhat simple, but that all works. The content is all personal and fairly open, nothing shocking: "Save your breath I can tell by the look on your face 'cause I came across the footnote you placed on page twenty-eight that night eyes were held and words were felt and we shared everything that we knew but with someone new..." I'm not really into this. I think the songwriting is really boring and generic and nothing jumps out at me other than the closing instrumental piece. Those kids who are all over the "crazy go nuts" metalcore stuff might get into this, but there's really nothing about this that sets it apart or makes an impact for me. (5/10)
