Immaculate:Grotesque "Territory" CD
[RRRecords]
Six tracks of untitled noise from this rising experimental project. The 14-minute opening track immediately kicks in with a few minutes of fluttering ambient textures, slowly fading over to crisp distortion for brief spurts. Eventually these two textures blend more consistently as subtle feedback drifts in and out of the background and the distortion becomes more active - gradually thickening up or thinning out and varying more on the stereo panning angle, playing off of all such variations for its duration. The next track is less than two minutes, over in a flash, probably the shortest from Immaculate:Grotesque to date, leading into more subtly fluttering distortion in track #3, which remains fairly consistent for its 10 minutes, varying very slightly along the way, but remaining quite persistent in its general tone. The following piece is also similar at the start, fairly calm in its use of distortion, though possessing more movement and a bit more high- and low-end. Slowly the distortion gets more aggressive, but it never reaches what I would call a "full-blown" level of volume or abrasiveness, and I actually enjoy that as it allows some strange illusory effects to manifest themselves within the bass tones. The last two tracks are more than a whopping 18 minutes each, with the fifth composition unloading the first almost totally harsh assault of the disc - perhaps a smidge less aggressive than the norm for Immaculate:Grotesque, but definitely a scorcher nonetheless. By stark contrast, the final selection opens with minimal ambient hums and reverberated resonance, kicking in some dry midrange distortion almost two minutes in. Things bounce back and forth between these two styles, tending to combine the clashing sides very effectively, carefully leaning towards one or the other with a good sense of dynamics. The CD-R comes in a black slim cardboard slipcase sealed shut with a wraparound pasted over the covers. There's a similar insert inside, and they've been xeroxed onto what appear to be magazine pages or something, so it's all blue and black, layered, which actually looks really cool. Simple yet effective. I like this disc a lot. Another strong, strong effort from Immaculate:Grotesque. Limited to 100 copies, but in my opinion absolutely worthy of being pressed onto vinyl or pro CD. Check this one out... (7/10)
