Hum of the Druid/Conversations About the Light "split" CD
[self-released]
Hum of the Druid opens with "Volcanorifice Encased" at about nine minutes of bleak and sinister harsh noise - despite the lulling ambience perhaps suggested by the project's name. There's definitely a nice low-end throb herein, but thick midrange distortion panned against twisted near-feedback drives the track. In many way it's more like death industrial than harsh noise to me, there's just no real rhythm to it - it's abstract but atmospheric. Conversations About the Light's "Ephemeral Architecture" is an excellent dark ambient piece that flows calmly between rumbling low-end synths and thick, resonant stringed instruments (not too musical or obvious). "Druid/Light" is a collaborative track between the two, certainly leaning more towards the minimal dark ambient side. This is probably the most ominous piece on the disc, quietly pulsing forth with heavy bass and some wispy lower-midrange. It's more reminiscent of the Conversations About the Light piece, which makes me curious to know if Hum of the Druid has a more relaxed side as well. The CD-R comes in a small plastic sleeve with a sticker on each side consisting of artwork and minimal text. It looks pretty consistent, I don't mind it. I'm a little surprised that the disc is limited to a mere 24 copies, as the material is very strong... so do act fast if you plan to acquire one of these gems. Very nice. I'm highly pleased with all three compositions. (7/10)
Running time - 19:52, Tracks: 3
[Notable tracks: all three are very well executed]
