S.O.S. "s/t" CD
[Perfect Victim]
Six tracks of rocked out hardcore from Boston in a mere 13 minutes or so. The vocals are raspy and have a sarcastic sort of bitter anger happening, and that's where most of the hardcore sort of influence comes in. It's there musically as well, but the music tends to be moderately paced and subtly melodic with a lot of tasteful rock 'n' roll going on to the overall vibe of things. "We Drown Because We Can" is a solid opener with a catchy air and a slightly quicker approach, "The Dark" is significantly slower and somewhat quieter, but closer "Save Our Souls Part 1" is more openly melodic and dynamic - definitely standing head and shoulders above the other five songs (even as an instrumental). As far as the recording goes, it's a little rough around the edges, and some of that makes sense, but I think a little added brightness would help. The guitar tone needs a little extra bite, and then the bass could be turned up a smidge to handle more of the low-end. The vocals sound pretty much fine, as do the drums, everything could just use minor tweaking. I'm not bothered by it, though. But the layout blows. I don't know what the hell they were thinking, but I hope it was supposed to be a joke. A baby blue background with aqua colored unicorns? Huh? The lyrics are personal and pretty basic, dropping some cool lines here and there but not making much of an overall impact. "You target those who you envy the most jealous you have no one close, But all you do is bring us closer (give it up it's getting old), Incapable of being close you push away what you love most, Nearism is lost on us..." In the end I think this is a decent EP, but I'd like to hear them pick up the pace a little to throw some more energy into the mix. There are a few good songs here, but not a whole lot really jumps out at you when all is said and done. (6/10)
