...Starring Janet Leigh "Welcome... Now You Can Never Leave" CD
[self-released]

This is one brief fuckin' demo... two tracks in less than eight minutes. Chaotic metalcore most definitely influenced by earlier recordings from The Dillinger Escape Plan in its use of frantic changes and flurries of lead riffs as well as jazzy clean breaks with snazzy drum patterns and such. So, you know, expect dissonant chords and lots of caustic tremolo picking, quick stops and fucked up rhythms, lots of alternate picking and quick palm-muting, some nice dual guitar interaction, hoarse screaming vocals, and so on. Admittedly the songwriting isn't that wonderful nor original, and the recording needs work, but these kids have a shitload more musical aptitude than most of what I hear from signed bands who play this style. The playing is all pretty coherent with very few subtly noticeable flubs, the drumming really shines at times and has a warm presence, their timing seems to be strong, etc. I'm not hearing much bass guitar at all and the guitar tone needs a lot more power, there's definitely a weird sort of sheen happening, but for a quick demo it gets the point across. "Fingertips Trigger the Static Touch" closes with a few minutes of experimental noise which may or may not be necessary (hey, it's a little something different), but for the most part it's a shuffle of riffs back and forth. So, I think working on making the songs a bit more tangible or memorable would be a strong move since their technical proficiency is almost in check. The CD-R comes in a color slipcase with strange imagery on it that I guess represents a broken fence or something? It's not the best looking thing I've ever seen both because the color is bland and because I don't like the typeface, but it's alright. Inside is a small xeroxed insert with the lyrics and contact information on it. As far as content goes the songs are pretty abstract, a certain degree of bleakness comes across, but nothing too specific. Not bad. It needs work, I would definitely suggest they try to do something a bit more creative to separate themselves from the pack, but this isn't bad. I'd expect to hear something more out of 'em at some point. (6/10)
