Outbreak "You Make Us Sick" CD
[Bridge Nine]
What do you know? Another in a slew of recent releases from Bridge Nine that's a little different from their norm. These guys crank out 15 tracks of fast hardcore/punk in a mere 15 minutes. Expect straightforward chord progressions with snarling sarcastic vocals that are totally awesome and really give the band an identity that steps aside from most of what's out there. "You're a Waste" is a little more rocked out and memorable, "No One Cares" is a little slower and almost hits on a traditional breakdown part, "Pushed Aside" is a fast and furious 26-second blast that touches on some subtle crossover elements, and "Out(break)tro" has a rocked out lead and some slower chord progressions that do make for a nice outro. There's not a wealth of variety throughout the disc, but there are some highlights. The core of the disc was recorded by the one and only Don Fury, which has always been a bit of a "selling point" within the hardcore scene, but I honestly think the recording could use a little more punch. Don't get me wrong, it sounds really good, it's nice and dry, aptly clear, and fits what they're doing, but something about it could use a little extra kick in the ass. Maybe the bass could be louder? Maybe the guitars could use a little more density? I don't know, it sounds fine, so fuck it. The last four tracks were recorded two months after the sessions with Don Fury and sound similar but slightly rawer, with more distance to the overall sound. The layout kicks ass here, with a few live shots of the band and some flyers collaged underneath spattered red, white, and black textures with crisp, clean text. Lyrically this is some of the most volatile and in your face material I've come across lately, pulling absolutely no punches whatsoever, and I have to say I'm into that: "Hey stuck up prick, yeah that's you, this one's about how much I hate you. Whine and complain is all you've done today, an ignorant motherfucker with nothing good to say. The world will be a better place, when someone knocks you in your fucking face. Do me a favor, fucking die, so I don't have to listen to you bitch and cry." Priceless. There's definitely a lot of old school styled hardcore in here musically, but the vocals are coming from a totally different realm, so the overall feel ends up being a little different. Fans of this label should still be into it, and I'm not saying it's original, but the attitude stands out. I like it. (7/10)
