Goat/Pechuga "Mirror:Mix" CD
[Pitchphase]
Two long tracks (more than 15 minutes each) of collaborative noise from the one and only Goat, added to/tweaked/finalized by Pechuga. The work is "dedicated" to experimental sound pioneer Klaus Schulze and former Motörhead guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke (I'll take a wild guess at which half of the collaboration is responsible for the latter - Goat?). Truth be told, these pieces flow very nicely considering their length, with lots of distorted movement, as well as unexpected dropouts to quieter hums or minimal sizzles. There's definitely a good chunk of blazing harsh noise here, one that has a warmer, thicker aesthetic to it - characteristic of Goat's solo material - so I'd assume that's something that has been left largely intact when it presents itself. My favorite moment of the disc comes about 11 minutes into "Mirror:Mix", where harsh fits of distortion fight to be heard as they gradually transition into distant feedback wails and mincing low-end ambience. "Klaus Doom Death (In Dub)" starts out far differently, with simplistic drones and hums very slowly building up, crispy distortion suddenly arising a little over two minutes in and vibrating back and forth, never getting too intense or constant. Things settle down a bit minutes later, at around 10 minutes becoming very faint as a rhythmic bass surge fades to the fore before sifting back into thick, oppressive drones and very carefully placed midrange wisps. All in all this release is pieced together expertly, as everything transitions nicely and feels intentional and thought out as far as atmosphere is concerned, perfectly exemplified with the way the title track draws to a close, and some of the subtler panning effects in "Klaus Doom Death..." Very nice. The CD-R comes in a great sleeve printing in dark black ink on matte brown stock. The designs are all abstract and have lots of detailed jagged lines and such creating overlapping psychedelic types of patterns. Minimal but highly effective. Also inside are a larger artwork foldout and a Pitchphase sticker. A fittingly attractive package for a solid release. Definitely recommended. A tremendously balanced piece of work this is. (7/10)
