Gemisuadi "Live Like an Animal - Fuck Like an Animal" CD
[Amputated Vein]
24 tracks of death/grind in a mere 29 minutes. The band's style is one that blends your straightforward grindcore blasts and classic riffing sensibilities with slower mosh styled rhythms, obligatory pinch harmonic riffs (thankfully not too over the top), some quirkier patterns or rare technical runs, etc. - all topped off by a dual vocal attack of high screams and lower shouting. Thankfully you can barely understand any of the vocals, because the lyrics are horrendous, and the songwriting, while far from excellent, is forceful enough to carry them for about a half-hour, in the form of brief compositions that pretty much never hit even two minutes. The main setback is that out of 24 songs, few stand out as truly memorable, so it can be a bit of a blur. "Pussies, Dicks, and Clits" uses some excellent dissonant riffing and opens strong with significantly slower rhythms that have a chugging death metal groove (later reaching an obnoxious level, sadly), the succinct "Two Guys Sucking One Cock" is practically one large breakdown, and speaking of breakdowns - the break in "OK" is fucking awesome. Tracks like "#$%&" can give the bass a little more breathing room at times, and those moments sound killer, so they might consider working more with that. "Left Right" opens with one of the more focused chord progressions in its use of classic grindcore attributes and overall punch (not to mention the track drops some of the disc's strongest Cannibal Corpse-esque tremolo picking). The entire affair was produced by Steve Austin, whose work as a producer I've never been impressed with, but thankfully this sounds good enough to get by. The drums are clearer than everything else so they sit a little too far out in front of the other elements, which gets frustrating, but you can make out the bass against the thick guitars, the vocals are placed well, and so on. Nothing sounds terrible, I'd just like to hear a more efficient mix with a bit more clarity to everything that's going on. The playing could use some tightening up as well, but I'm not bothered by that so much in this case. Despite the fact that the song titles and lyrics are silly and immature, the design here fucking kills. I love it. Everything is clean and consistent as far as color and type, and the imagery of/representing abstractions of flesh, innards, and bloody fluids really does look somehow beautiful. Very fucking nice. Now, as for those lyrics, I had low expectations but hoped for the best, despite titles like "Pooped Pants and Crapped Cunts", "Eat My Dong", and "Two Guys Sucking One Cock". Sadly, as expected, there is no "best" when it comes to such song titles, so lyrically you'll be treated to lines like, "When I was on the phone with you my dick turned into a bottle of Elmer's glue, I can't stop thinking about cumming on you." Horrible. How can people live with themselves when that's all they have to express with their band? For whatever reason lyrics are only included for about half of the songs, but as you can see from the preceding example, it's of no concern. This is pretty good. To me it's a shame the band has such retarded lyrical content because they're basically on point musically and clearly have good taste for graphic design, so they ought to be dealing in topics that are at least a little more... mature? (6/10)
