Righteous Jams "s/t" 7"
[Anger Management]
I believe this record contains the band's 2003 demo, and as the fact that the record cover reads "Boston Straight Edge" would suggest, this is straight up straightedge hardcore with a pissed off yet sarcastic attitude, and I'm into it. I believe members of Mental and Stop & Think are responsible for this. Expect moderate speeds, straight yelling vocals, old school styled chord progressions, and at times a little more rock happening during portions of tracks like "Scream 'n' Shout". Some of the faster vocal patterns kick ass as well, and the breakdowns are solid without getting too heavy or anything like that. The last track, "Righteous Dub", is just that... a reggae influenced instrumental track. Go figure. The recording is really good as well, not polished, not too raw, a good mix with plenty of bass presence, etc. It sounds just about like what I'd want to hear from a band of this nature, though maybe the guitars could be a little thicker and louder? Who knows? The record comes in a simple sleeve with minimal artwork, some handwritten text, and the lyrics, which can be pretty classic: "Booze 'n' dope tempt every man? Fuck that I got my righteous jams, Stupid fool you pose for fame, The righteous don't need that shit, I leave you suckers in the dust, My righteous jams are gonna bust..." Good stuff. Short but sweet, and I definitely appreciate their pissed off lightheartedness, if that makes any sense. (7/10)
