Until the End "Let the World Burn" CD
[Eulogy]
They're back with a new EP of brutal metalcore (part studio, part live), but this time they sound more like Hatebreed to me than they did before (except that the songs are a little bit longer). Especially the vocals, which sound almost exactly like Hatebreed 95% of the time. It's still pretty damn good, though. They've got the formula perfected and they're not fucking around. Slow, churning mosh breaks? Check. Moderately paced power chord rhythms? Check. Slightly faster traditional hardcore influences? Check. There's not a lot of variety, but the writing is strong and thankfully they're staying true to the genre, as opposed to farting around with a bunch of god damn chaotic riffs or Swedish death metal harmonies. They still need to work on their production, though. I don't know why they like using a dry guitar sound like this, especially when the bass is really hard to hear and the drums don't add a great deal of low-end thickness to the mix. It sounds okay, I can listen to it, but if the guitars were tighter and heavier and the bass louder this shit would fucking crush. Leave the drums alone, kick the bass way up, thicken up the guitars and smooth out the edges, and there you go. Bloodshed on the ol' dancefloor... In addition to the six new studio tracks, there are three live songs that were recorded in Switzerland (2002). The sound quality is tolerable, but it's not great. It's too flat and the guitars/vocals dominate, but I've heard much worse. Of course things get sort of amusing when the crowd (poorly) sings along and stuff, and there are plenty of calls for the crowd to gather into a circle pit or what have you... ahhh, it's alright. The layout is pretty slick. The imagery is simple: Everything's red, there are some gas masks, some violent photos of war victims, and textures resembling concrete/rubble and such. Everything is printed on matte paper, which of course makes it look better, and the fonts are consistent throughout. The lyrics are all pissed as shit, and this should set the tone, "You have no fucking heart, There's nothing more true than this, I'll rip your life apart, I swear, There is nothing more true, I will never be blind, I will bring the end, I will destroy your faith..." If you like your hardcore brutal as fuck and don't care for innovation, this band isn't likely to let you down. The live tracks are basically filler if you ask me, but the first six tracks are cool. (7/10)
