Mara'akate - s/t

Mara'akate "s/t" LP
[Alone]

This is discordant, chaotic, wild 'n' crazy metalcore with some jangly, noisy indie rock parts happening on occasion. The vocal screams are heavily distorted at times, adding to the overall craziness of the music. This is some of the most amelodic and abrasive material I've come across lately, though oddly at times there are some melodic passages. For me this band is all about the rhythm section, though. The drums and bass sound great and I really enjoy their performances. But overall the writing isn't my thing because it's just too much. There's no real flow, it's just a flurry of changes and a barrage of noisy riffing. I can appreciate the "What the hell!?" factor here, but this isn't an easy listen. "Wolfenstein 3D" is by far the best track because the writing is more subdued and immediately becomes more tangible. The recording's not bad at all. The mix can be somewhat messy, but everything is audible, and really... I can't imagine something this nutty being too clean. No lyrics or anything are included. Just the LP and a full color sleeve. The art is weird! The front cover shows a robot looking at a wall of TV screens that have the band members' faces displayed on them, and the back is a flat image of that same wall. Bizarre. I can't make out even one word of the vocals, so I wish they'd have thrown in the lyrics, but oh well. This is a 45rpm 12" EP that pulls the old "program repeats on both sides" cassette trick. I'm not really sure why, but hey, whatever. This just isn't my cup of tea. I can't get into much of the over top "crazy go nuts" stuff these days. It just seems too easy, you know? (5/10)
