Askeleton - Modern Fairy Tales

Askeleton "Modern Fairy Tales" CD
[Alone]

Honestly? No holds barred? This one-man project sounds like a reject from the worst of the worst of 80's synth pop. And don't get me wrong, I fucking love 80's music... but this shit's just not cutting it. It's boring, the beats are way too simple and ineffective, the vocals lack enthusiasm, the music is uninteresting and unmemorable... it's just not really that good at all. I honestly can't imagine this having been released by a label as opposed to being self-released by the band. I mean, sure, it's actually pretty well recorded. Everything sounds fine, the mix is solid... it doesn't sound like a piece of crap. But the music just feels like it's striving to be something that it is falling very short of actually being. I mean, fuck, in all seriousness some of this stuff sounds like a children's album to me. It's a little bit darker than that, but if you played some of this stuff for preschool kids they would dance around the room like Michael fucking Jackson in his prime. The layout's alright. I really like the handwritten text, and the simple illustrations are fairly amusing and effective, but I do think the presentation as a whole is slightly plain. This guy has a lot of fuckin' equipment though - as exemplified by the photo of the sole band member standing amongst numerous guitars, basses, drums, keyboards, effects pedals, a boombox, mics and headphones, tons of amplifiers, etc. I'm not particularly fond of the lyrics, but maybe that's just me. "An overdue notice and a rocking chair, Some people look better than others with bows in their hair, A one time up and comer has left with his things, I'm sure that you'd really miss him and all the love he'd bring..." I don't know, it's just not working for me. In fact, this entire release isn't working for me. I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt because he was competent enough to handle all of this himself and it's listenable, but really... the world doesn't need this CD, you know? (2/10)
