Where Fear and Weapons Meet "Control" CD
[Eulogy]
I never really paid that much attention to this band so not only did I not remember what they sounded like, but I sure as hell didn't know they were still around. But apparently they're back after a two-year break now. Their members are or have been a part of tons of other bands like Against All Authority, Culture, Destro, Keepsake, Morning Again, and Until the End... but this particular band is more along the lines of straightforward hardcore than most of their other bands' work. They are a little bit slower and heavier on occasion, but the structures and the feel are basically straight up (slightly metallic) hardcore with shouting vocals, fairly simple chord progressions and song structures, etc. At times they remind me a little bit of mid-period Sick of it All or something like that, but with a slightly heavier NYHC edge (check out "End in Sight"). The sound is pretty good, but slightly unbalanced. The drums stand out more than anything else because the kick drums are too thick and the snare has more snap to it than anything. So the vocals and the drums tend to cover the widest range of tones and stand out the most, while the bass falls off in the distance and the guitars, while not bad, are a little bit on the muddy side (partly due to the way they're affected by the drums and the bass tone). I think the drum tones are probably the biggest issue. Tightening the mix and getting the percussion under control would make a big difference. The layout's sort of neat here. File folders, illustrated mugshots, bullet holes, layers of handwriting and typewriter text, diagrams, targets, and fingerprints, etc. Everything fits together nicely and all of the text is integrated into the layout very nicely so that it looks like part of the actual artwork rather than text slapped on top of the artwork, which is sort of rare to see. The lyrics come in short lines and fairly short passages that deal with personal issues and keep things simple. "Do you want to rise up. And be free. Open your eyes and. You will see. Pain. Corruption. And everything in between. Suffering. Despair. The lies you told to me." I don't know, this isn't bad, but it's not essential by any means. I mean, since the members have been involved with better bands, I'm not exactly sure why they'd resurrect Where Fear and Weapons Meet after two years for a 15-minute EP that's not really offering up anything particularly exciting. (5/10)
