Welcome to Your Life "There is No Turning Back" CD
[Indecision]
Here's some modern metalcore that's a lot more promising than most of the shit that's out there right now for several reasons: 1. the vocals are gruff midrange shouts rather than the typical high screams that are all the rage these days, 2. they keep the melodic Swedish death metal influences under control and stray from doing tons of generic tremolo picking riffs, 3. the songwriting is a bit more energetic and varied than the competition's, and 4. they actually play some solos (granted they could use some work as far as note choice and arrangement, but at least they're there). This stuff is definitely more on the metal than the hardcore side of things, too. I love their melodies, they're not truly original or anything, but they don't just play a bunch of Iron Maiden/In Flames styled ripoff dual guitar harmonies, they put a little bit more thought into it. The title track even starts with some quiet acoustic guitars and beautiful female singing - fucking excellent. "Two" is an acoustic instrumental, also very nice, I'd love to hear some of this stuff incorporated more firmly in with their standard approach. As far as the recording, the vocals are a little bit loud, and a greater bass presence would definitely add some force to the slower riffing. But the drums sound fine and the guitars are pretty good. I'd prefer a smoother/brighter distortion sound, but this would work out well if the mix was evened out. And, I mean, it really sounds pretty damn good now, so... The visuals here are somewhat typical, I've seen a lot of layouts like this in recent times, with the bright, fiery colors, busy layers of text as texture, imagery of skulls and faded faces, dirty textures, etc. But that being said, this thing still looks really good, and I like it, generic or not. They lyrics are alright, nothing really grabs me, but I've seen worse. "Life's a risk. Victories. The regrets. All the people that you've met. All those times you wish to forget. Life's a risk. The hopes, the fears, the laughs, the tears. The way your beliefs change through the years. Life's a risk. Your love, your hate. The bonds you create. No way to predict your fate. Life's a risk. Realize in life nothing is certain except the end." I'll be honest, at first I thought I would hate this because I'm really sick of this style, but this band is far better than average and gives me a glimmer of hope for this genre. (7/10)
