Downsided "#6" zine
[zine]

Finally, this great "hardcore thrash fanzine" from Finland is back with another killer issue. This time around the issue is the exact same size as the last one, but the layout is a bit better and the content is overall more entertaining. Most of the columns are somewhat random and personal, though actually interesting (especially those from editor Toni E.), the Wheel of Dharma/Yhdeksäs Surmanluoti Russian tour diary is an excellent fucking read, the interviews are somewhat short at times but still manage to get some good information out there (with the Out Cold and Rytmihäiriö discussions being the best of the bunch), and the reviews are pretty solid - not to mention that there seem to be more of them this time. Generally they're pretty serious, but every now and then an item turns up that is clearly not in line with what Downsided covers, and that's when they get sarcastic with a healthy dose of attitude, and you've gotta love that. There are demo reviews, zine reviews (with two sections, one for zines in Finnish, the other for zines in English), a couple of book reviews, and a slew of record reviews to finish things off. The only thing that disappointed me was the retrospective article on the almighty fucking G.I.S.M., not because it is particularly bad, but because it is far too short and less than informative. In some instances the piece assumes that the reader already knows certain tidbits about the band, and aside from acting as a quick history less this is nothing more than a brief, well research little blurb about an awesome band. Since the author obviously knows his shit, I think more effort and detail should have been exercised. But anyway, this is still a great zine, and one that I hope to continue seeing in the future. Not many D.I.Y. zines are churning out quality material like this anymore, so Downsided is among the proud few who are definitely sticking to their guns. Check this one out, it's inexpensive and it's always a good read. (8/10)
