Divide & Conquer "#2" zine
[zine]
Here's a solid free zine out of Philly, or at least I assume it's free because I got it for free with a distro order and there's no price listed anywhere on the cover. Most of the bands within fall on the tougher side of the hardcore line, but not always, and despite the fact that the black and white newsprint zine is on the skimpy side as far as total number of pages and amount of content, it's really a pretty good (albeit quick) read that held my attention for just about an hour or so. The Madball interview was surprisingly good, despite a few bunk questions that have been asked a million times, and I also enjoyed the chats with The Bad Luck 13 Riot Extravaganza and Shattered Realm, among others... though some of the interviews tend to be on the short side. There are a few articles, of which few are really that interesting, and a couple of pages of reviews close things out. I didn't really read the reviews because just scanning through they didn't really cover anything that I haven't already heard. The reviews don't seem to be too bad, but they could go into a bit more detail. I like the fact that they sometimes mention lyrical content and such, and they don't like everything covered either. There aren't that many ads, but the layout could use some work. The fonts are clean and legible, but perhaps slightly large. They could fit in some more content if they dropped the font size down for sure. That's my main suggestion here: More content. What they're offering isn't half bad, to say the least, but they need more of it to really make a mark. I'll be curious to check out future issues to see if what they cover and how they cover it is consistent, but overall I did enjoy issue #2. It's hard to complain about something that's free, but I see potential here that's not yet being fully realized, so... if they keep at it, then two thumbs up. (6/10)
