Deadbodieseverywhere "Buy a Bullet.Rent a Gun" CD
[Intolerant Messiah]

Here's a brief five-track EP from these brutal grinders that existed from 1994 - 2001. I'm not that familiar with their other material, but this is a solid 12+ minutes of filthy grindcore with a good mix of tempos and some great dissonant riffing. The vocals range from low to midrange growls and high screams to whispers, with a few other insane applications employed on occasion. With no song topping two-and-a-half minutes they keep things moving nicely, and somehow manage to cover a lot of ground in the process. At times it can be somewhat complex and chaotic, but they're tight players, so it's not sloppy, and therefore it hits like a ton of bricks instead of blowing past you like a powerless wind (as is often the case with this type of stuff). "Bullshit Life" is the perfect formula for a grind song, complete with pulverizing slow rhythms, plenty of speed and vocal variation, excellent integration of samples, etc. The same goes for "Sitting on the Edge of Nothing", which is similar to some degree as far as employing samples (tastefully) and some excellent tempo changes (specifically the moderately paced rhythms). The disc begins and ends with some awesome experimental noise textures as well, so I'm really into this. I like the recording, too. The drums sound pretty good (though distant), the guitars are really gritty but heavy and have a weird sort of reverb on them, the vocals sound perfect, and the bass tone... holy shit! The bass tone rips! It's distorted to hell and sounds totally fucked up (in a good way). Fucking awesome. The mix is good for what they're doing too, because it's clear enough to let things breathe despite the texture of the distortion and the often dizzying speeds. There's also some CD-Rom footage that includes 10 live videos for tracks like "Chopshop", "Full Body Cast", and "Waste of Sin", among others. Most of the footage is decent, and the live sound is okay, but I don't like the fact that the videos are edited together from different footage from separate shows in most cases, because the video's not synched up with the audio, and it gets old seeing the same angle of the drummer in the same setting, etc. I'd rather have seen 10 plain old live videos where the scenery doesn't change. It's still a cool addition, though. I totally love the layout. The band logo rules, the color scheme rules, the collaged imagery rules... it just looks fucking great. The fonts are small and crisp, contrasting the busy layering of imagery well, and the small photos of generally violent images make sense in relation to everything else. The lyrics are brief but carry a message, sometimes more caustic than others: "Biomechanical soldiers of capitalism, Marching blindly into self destruction, Sprockets and cogs, Reverse socialism, Programmed by political corruption, Faith is a piece of paper, Reality a smoking gun, The human race has no victor, Because death is our eradicator..." It's a damn shame this band broke up, because this is fucking awesome, and if this is where they were heading, they could've done some serious motherfuckin' damage with a follow-up release. (7/10)
