Catasexual Urge Motivation "Nekronicle" CD
[Razorback]
Take a couple of Japanese sickos and throw in a drum machine. What do you get? Lots of fucked up gore grind, that's what! This disc collects tracks from the band's demos, split 7"s and cassettes, as well as compilation tracks and a few previously unreleased goodies - all of which was originally recorded/released between 1994 and 1997. Included is one track from 1994's "Catharsis" demo, and then the "Rape Trauma Syndrome" demo (1995), tracks from the "Necrophallus" split 7" with Squash Bowels and "Ritual Rape Mutilation" split 7" with Slough (both from 1996), 1996's split cassette with Goropsy, and two tracks from the "Hungry Urinary Urn" four-way split 7" (1997). Then it's on to the comp tracks and unreleased material. All of this stuff is pretty raw and has a lot of sludgy slow riffing going on that I really fucking like - the texture of the guitar distortion works fucking great with the sick, nasty vocal growls. Overall it doesn't even seem like there are lyrics (even though there are), it just sounds like the guys are making the most fucked up noises that they possibly can in their throats. I actually like this stuff better than the full-length they did on Razorback a few years ago, but the only problem here is that from song to song there's no variety at all (aside from the occasional funky drum machine beat - which always kicks ass) and a lot of the tracks are a bit long. I tend to like the way they use samples, but I don't like the fact that most of the samples are just obnoxious clips of women screaming or moaning. The samples of movie trailers and things are a lot better, but often too lengthy. From a stylistic standpoint I definitely like the range of tempos and the rough but even recording a lot. Despite having been recorded during many different sessions, most of these songs are quite consistent in recording quality, and nothing really bothers me. The layout is pretty damn good. I love the artwork and the crisp band logo, and they went to a lot of detail in the booklet, listing the source of every track, original release dates, sometimes including lyrics, sometimes including recording information, etc. There are also images of all of the old record/cassette covers spread out through the layout along with fake newspaper articles and things like that. Of course all of the songs are about violent murder, killing, blood, gore, bloody murder, gory killing, etc. You get the idea. This is a damn good collection of songs, but I would really bet that this material was stronger in its original format, because over an hour of this stuff is just too much to take... but a couple of tracks on a split 7" or a demo would be very cool. Fans of the band should rejoice over this, but as someone who can only handle this kind of thing in small doses, I'll have to spin this one bit by bit. But as a partial discography this is definitely well handled. (6/10)
