Bee and Flower "What's Mine is Yours" CD
[Neurot]
I had no idea what to expect from this band, but I assumed it would be something relatively dark and not exactly typical. That much is true, but not only that, but this is also fucking incredible! In addition to the core of traditional instruments (guitar, bass, and drums) this record is littered with keyboards, violin, glockenspiel, lap steel, piano, and organ. And the central female vocals are fucking amazing. I can't even put into words how awesome this is. I'm not even sure how to describe it. The songs are fairly quiet and calm, but brooding and atmospheric. It reminds me of a couple of bands/musicians that I've heard before, though oddly I can't name a one of them off the top of my head. This band could certainly be hugely popular. Despite their lack of radio friendly writing tactics, this is just all around wonderful music that many, many people could enjoy. It's just gutwrenchingly emotional material, and it's truly curious as well. The recording is pristine. I have no complaints. Everything is perfect. All of the tones are warm, dense, and natural. The mix is superb. All of the layers and textures have room to breathe. Brilliant, really. I really like the layout a lot as well. The front cover is a strangely quaint photograph of some sort of Asian lantern dimly lighting the corner of a room, and inside the lyrics are printed in straight text over slightly worn decorative wall textures. The lyrics are pretty cryptic in my eyes, "You lift the satellite and we wave goodbye, So shine me a lie, You lift the satellite, I hope that you make it, So shine me a lie, Take the time away, suspended, You turn and say so long darling, I'm pinwheeling slowly, I let it roll off me..." A fitting match for the music, indeed. This is just an insanely excellent piece of work. The entire record flows without a hitch, and I'm liking it more and more as time passes. But even on the first listen, this grabbed my attention right away and never let go. Absolutely worth checking out. Absolutely... This review is pretty awful, I just really can't do this record much justice with words, so I'll just offer my strong recommendation. (9/10)
