Acursed - Livet är Den Längsta Vägen Till Helvetet

Acursed "Livet är Den Längsta Vägen Till Helvetet" LP
[Putrid Filth Conspiracy]

Whoa! This thing fucking smokes! These Swedes start things off with an excellent acoustic introduction with hauntingly bright guitars (including 12-strings) playing a spacious repetitive chord progression with some samples in the background, but don't let that fool you... because then it's right onto some fucking sinister as hell hardcore/punk meets crust/grind with driving tempos and forceful melodic tinges and some slower, almost sludgy breaks that are absolutely destructive! And don't overlook those relentless vocal screams, either! This is definitely reminiscent of both Skitsystem and Nasum to some degree, it's sort of a mix of the two, taking the speed and the heaviness, but also adding some additional melody and a different approach to tempo changes and arrangements - and, quite honestly, a more energetic approach that is really refreshing to these ears. Tracks like "Only Burn" are more rhythmic and moderately paced, with some subtly dissonant riffing that I would almost dare compare to post-hardcore in some ways, but the aggression factor is still off the charts. And there are actually several (four) instrumental pieces herein that act as nice interludes, though none of them are as involved or intriguing as the aforementioned "Intro". The closing track, "Confrontation", is far longer and slower than any of the other songs, with lots of breaks where the rhythm section takes hold and the guitars step to the background... but holy shit are there some epic buildups present. Impressive. This is easily one of the best recordings that Nasum's Mieszko Talarczyk has ever been responsible for: Massive drums, a crushing guitar tone, scathing vocals, just enough of a pounding bass presence, etc. I have no complaints. I'd like to hear a tad more bass, but I think this thing sounds fucking great... rugged high-end and all. This is especially well done considering that the entire LP was recorded and mixed in one day, and mastered on the next. Nice. The layout is simple but highly effective. The LP comes in a matte sleeve that's printed in black ink on light gray stock. The front cover has a high contrast image of a not-so-cheery person and the back is jet black with one word scribbled in what I assume to be Swedish (I can barely make out any of the lettering). Inside is a black and white insert, also on matte paper, with brief lineup information, and a compact lyrical presentation that looks excellent. The lyrics are very concise, not to mention dark, but the point is still nailed home: "I'm deeper now deeper than I thought I could go I disappear under the crunching wheel time goes by time is running out it will turn out the lights turn out all the lights." Fuck, there's not one weak track on this LP. Not fucking one. Excellent. I'm really into this. This is one of the few records from such genres that's really hit me hard as of late, so I must recommend this at all costs. Superb... (9/10)
