Rot - Old Dirty Grindcores

Rot "Old Dirty Grindcores" CD
[2+2=5]

Here's a semi-discography from these legendary Brazilian grinders that have been kicking around since fucking 1990 - including tracks from tons of splits and compilations, all arranged in reverse chronological order. There are some unreleased tracks thrown in as well, totaling a heaping 65 songs in about as many minutes! In addition to splits with 2 Minutos de Odio, Mesrine, Depression, Twisted Truth, Entrails Massacre, Agathocles, Psycho, and Mindfart, you'll also get an unreleased studio session from 2001, extra studio tracks from 1996 and 1994, and demo/rehearsal songs from 1991/1992. The band's style is relatively dirty midpaced grindcore with burly vocal growls as well as some scathing high screams. Of course there are some blasting speeds at times, but they focus more on forceful rhythms that aren't really that fast, which I enjoy. The tempo changes are great and it's not one of those things where everything is all the same speed all the time. Of course the production quality varies significantly since these songs cover 10 years and about 15 or so different recording sessions, but I'm not bothered by the rawness of any of the material per se. At times things can get a bit rugged, on occasion things are definitely muddy... but shit, it's grindcore, and some of it's pretty old... so fuck it. I seriously doubt a polished sound is something that this band is ever going to be after and the nastiness of the tones they tend to have going on here works since the mixes are generally strong (as are the songs), so it's all fine by me. Some of the pre-1996 material is really unrefined, and most of it tends to sound a lot quieter due to the muddiness present, but the songs are still solid, so you just have to deal with adjusting the volume here and there. The layout is really good, as not only does it detail where every track originally came from, but there are tons of band photos, a few images of their old record covers, and tons of awesome flyers from shows that they've played over the years. There's also a good chunk of the lyrics and some liner notes regarding the band's lengthy history - making for a thick booklet. Despite the band name and logo, not to mention musical style, don't assume that the lyrics are your usual gore grind nonsense, because that's not the case. Most of the lyrics are serious accounts dealing with social issues, which is pretty cool, if not a bit surprising. "Ignorant asshole, keeping racism alive. Inside your head brains I can't find! Discrimination to all those who don't fit their standards. Oh, you are so proud of your skin color, but can't you see? Beneath it we are all the same!" Admittedly 65 tracks and over an hour in total length is a bit much of this stuff to take in one sitting, but the release is very well handled and acts as an excellent document of a large chunk of what this band has been doing for the last 10+ years. If you're a fan of the band or raw grindcore in general this is worth looking into. (7/10)
