Revenge Therapy "s/t" CD
[Amendment]
Another quick EP of solid Virginia hardcore from Amendment Records. None of these songs hit two minutes, so they just plow through their brand of melodic, metallic, and at times discordant hardcore in quick bursts with no fucking around. The vocals are gruff shouts with some gang backups on occasion, working very well with the music. "Times Like These" is a fucking classic: Faster, more energetic, with plenty of changes and a balance of melody and sheer aggression, etc. "Bad Receiver" even has some singing backup vocals, which surprised the shit out of me, but the melodic rhythms are fucking awesome, as are the tempo changes. At the end of the disc there's a hokey unlisted acoustic track about ale - complete with chants of "Oi!" and a British accent. Nice. The production needs more bass and the vocals could stand to be mixed back in with the music a little more (especially the gang vocals), but everything else sounds good. The drums are dense and natural, the guitars are clear and just distorted enough, and so on. If the bass was louder and the vocals were flush with the instruments this would sound awesome. I like the imagery here a lot, the images are just simple and visually interesting, but as with the other releases I've seen from the Amendment label, the text is just too plain and disrupts the overall look and feel. It's not a big deal, but it is something to consider. The lyrics here can be brief but quite shocking, take "Bad Things Happen to Good People", for example: "Slit your wrists open. Let your kids find you. Love is difficult. She's gone and so are you." That's what I call blunt. Good stuff. I've yet to be disappointed by anything on this label, and that's a good sign. (7/10)
