Under Her Black Wings "Demo 04" CD

Here's some metallic hardcore from Finland that's heavy on the metal. It's an interesting blend because it's more metallic than a lot of the bands over there, but it leans more towards the Swedish style than thrash, but it's not melodic enough to be full-blown melodic Swedish death metal, and it's not so directly chunky, so it's not really hitting that NYHC vein either. It's like traditional European metalcore with a more energetic metal side as far as quick leads and little melodies and stuff. It's not original, but something about it is a little different, and I like the songwriting. "Enter a World Divine" drops some killer gallop rhythms, "Torn Down" blends a lot of cool dual guitar parts that fuse hard melodies with simplified mosh parts, etc. The recording needs work, but most everything else is in place. As far as the sound, it's a little thin and unbalanced, but they're on the right track. The vocals are strained screams that fall in with the music, but the drums are sort of flimsy at times, and somehow the guitars are sort of heavy but just not right. The bass adds a lot of thickness but lacks definition, so they really just need to polish up that guitar tone and mix things a little better. Although, the vocals sound a lot rawer than anything else, which is strange. The CD comes in a slim cardboard slipcase all done in high contrast black and white with nothing but bold text and some dirty textures. I think it looks pretty damn good, though. For a self-released demo it looks great, actually. I like these songs, it just needs something more in the production department. The CD is pro pressed and looks totally professional, I just wish the sound quality would reflect that to properly represent the songs. Not bad, hopefully next time... 'cause that's the only thing holding this back. (6/10)
