Foutredieu!!! "Untitled #1" 3" CD
[Brise-Cul]
This 21-minute 3" CD EP is limited to a mere 25 numbered copies and contains three ambient tracks, which to date have been fairly uncommon coming from Foutredieu!!! "At the (Atlantis) Gates" begins - a remix of songs from a band called Atlantis Gates (apparently a local power metal band) - using obviously sampled, but very cool manipulations of clean guitars and synths through its hypnotically repetitive nine minutes. It's fairly smooth and full, though there is a little bit of a hitch when the playback switches over to backwards from forwards, but just barely, and it's not really disruptive. "Soyez Résolus de ne Plus Servir..." is much shorter, sounding strangely like some sort of twisted progressive rock keyboard textures. Everything is deep and melodic, with a spoken word passage (in French) up front under some effects. The speaking is mixed far too loud and peaks to distortion at times however, also disrupting the calm melodies of the background tones, which can be frustrating. But this would be a great piece were it instrumental. "Tséjthaty (Sonate a la Douleur)" is the least melodic of the three compositions, also bringing in some lightly distorted textures and percussive layers amongst its deformed piano melodies and other brooding tones. The liner notes state that this track may or may not have been recorded at the same time as the "A-402 (My Own Prison)" release. The CD-R (which sadly has sloppy and tacky handwriting all over the face) comes in a tiny slim jewel case with an opaque yellow tray and a small xeroxed booklet with high contrast imagery of a mohawked punk and the band name layered on the front, while the back lists the songs and minor recording details. The center spread is mostly white, with "Sid Vicious is not dead... you are..." written across the center in bold type. I'm not sure I understand the connection there, but hey, whatever. All in all this is a nice release. I'm glad to see the project continuing to expand, and I think this is a very promising direction that, with a little bit more fine tuning, could yield impressive results. Very nice. I hope to hear more material like this from Foutredieu!!! in the future. (6/10)
